Israel Closes British Consulate in Jerusalem, Imposes Sanctions Over UK Settlement Punishments

Israel announced a series of retaliatory measures against the United Kingdom on Tuesday, including the closure of the British Consulate in East Jerusalem. This action follows the UK's imposition of economic sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi stated that the Israeli measures are a direct response to the British actions concerning settlements, which he characterized as interference in Israeli affairs and an attempt to influence upcoming elections, though he offered no evidence for these claims. The retaliatory steps also include expelling British representatives from the Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) for Gaza in Kiryat Gat, halting British participation in training Palestinian Authority security forces, and barring 12 elected British officials from entering Israel. Ashkenazi alleged these individuals were involved in anti-Israel and antisemitic activities and denied Israel's right to exist, without naming them.

Ashkenazi asserted that Britain initiated and planned these actions long ago, warning that Israel might take similar steps against other countries. "The message to any government that harms us is that whoever acts against Israel, Israel will act against them, and they will lose their influence and connection," he stated, adding that "actions against Israel will not go unanswered."

He further claimed the British decision was driven by "internal political reasons ahead of the Labour Party conference" and called it "morally distorted and a blatant interference in the affairs of a sovereign state." Defending the settlement enterprise, Ashkenazi argued for the Jewish people's right to live throughout the Land of Israel, citing historical ties and the Balfour Declaration.

These Israeli actions come after 12 countries, including Britain, Canada, and France, announced their intention to impose trade restrictions on goods from West Bank settlements due to escalating settler violence against Palestinians. The joint statement from these nations affirmed their commitment to implementing national restrictions on trade with settlements deemed illegal under international law. The move reflects growing international pressure on Israel regarding settlement expansion and settler violence, while the Israeli government continues to expand settlements and resist international demands.
