Israel Orders UK Consulate Closure in Jerusalem Amid Sanctions Dispute

Israel has given the United Kingdom one month to close its consulate in Jerusalem, a move that could significantly alter bilateral relations. The diplomatic mission must cease operations within 30 days, after which its British diplomats will lose their accreditation. This decision is Israel's response to sanctions recently imposed by the UK on Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced the closure, calling London's actions an unacceptable interference in Israel's internal affairs. The decision was approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The British consulate in Jerusalem holds a significant diplomatic role, managing the UK's relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and the Gaza Strip, serving as a key channel of communication with the Palestinian Authority.

Israel's retaliatory measures extend beyond the consulate's closure. British representatives involved in the U.S.-led coordination mechanism for Gaza, as well as British diplomats working in Ramallah, have been given just seven days to leave their posts. Furthermore, Israel has banned entry for several British politicians and halted the UK's participation in training Palestinian Authority security forces.

This escalating diplomatic conflict signifies a move beyond mere statements. London's sanctions against Israeli settlements have been met with Jerusalem's reduction of British diplomatic presence and cooperation on Palestinian issues. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband expressed regret over Israel's decision but stated that the government had anticipated potential consequences of its sanctions and does not intend to reverse its policy.
