Biblical Names Top Popularity Charts for Israeli Babies
Biblical and traditional names are experiencing a resurgence among newborns in Israel, alongside more modern choices. The Population and Immigration Authority released its annual data on the most popular baby names for the past year, ahead of the Jewish new year 5787.
Nationally, Muhammad was the most common name for boys, followed by Ariel, Yosef, Adam, and David. Rounding out the top ten boys' names were Omer, Rafael, Lavi, Michael, and Eitan.
However, when analyzing the Jewish population specifically, Ariel ranked first for boys. David came in second, followed by Rafael and Lavi. Uri, Michael, Eliya, Eitan, Yehuda, and Ari completed the top ten for Jewish boys.
For girls, Abigail led the overall national rankings, with Miriam, Lia, Libi, and Tamar following. The rest of the top ten included Ya'el, Ayala, Sarah, Ella, and Naya.
Within the Jewish population, Abigail also secured the top spot for girls. Libi and Tamar were the next most popular, followed by Ya'el and Lia. Ella, Ayala, Sarah, Noa, and Naya concluded the list.
