Suspected Ebola Case in Israel Prompts Health System Alert

Israel's Ministry of Health is investigating a suspected case of Ebola after a man who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo developed a fever and other symptoms consistent with the deadly virus. The patient has been isolated according to protocols for highly infectious diseases and is being transferred to Tel Aviv's Ichilov Medical Center. Health officials are conducting an epidemiological investigation to identify individuals who may have come into contact with the man. Currently, the case is only a suspicion, with no confirmed Ebola infections in Israel. Laboratory test results are expected within days.

The ministry's announcement comes amid ongoing Ebola outbreaks in Congo and Uganda. In response, Israel's healthcare system has heightened its readiness, with hospitals receiving special instructions, protective equipment and supplies procured, and mechanisms established for early detection in travelers returning from at-risk areas. The ministry emphasized that Ebola is not airborne, but transmitted through direct contact with an infected person's blood or bodily fluids.

Individuals who have recently traveled from Congo or Uganda and experience fever or other unusual symptoms within 21 days of their return are advised to self-isolate, avoid contact with others, and call the Ministry of Health's hotline at *5400. The ministry stressed that there is currently no basis to suggest an Ebola epidemic is beginning in Israel.
