Ex-IDF Soldier Accused of Planning to Join ISIS Abroad
Israeli prosecutors have indicted Khamis Sawad, a former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier from the Galilee region, on charges of preparing to travel abroad to join the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization. Sawad served in the IDF's tracker unit from 2017 to 2019.
According to the indictment, Sawad intended to join ISIS in Syria or Africa and had begun saving money for his departure. His preparations reportedly extended beyond financial planning; he allegedly studied combat methods and weapons handling, received instruction from senior ISIS officials, and watched videos of killings and beheadings to psychologically prepare for combat.
Over the past year, Sawad is also accused of downloading manuals on manufacturing missiles and drones, using sniper rifles, and implementing various military tactics. This case follows the indictment of two other northern Israeli residents, aged 16 and 19, who are also linked to ISIS and accused of planning attacks on Jerusalem's Temple Mount and an IDF base in northern Israel.
