Ex-IDF Soldier Charged With Planning to Join ISIS

An indictment has been filed against Khamis Sawad Hamira, a Bedouin resident of the Galilee who previously served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), on suspicion of identifying with the Islamic State (ISIS) and planning to join the terrorist organization abroad. Hamira, in his 30s, was arrested following a joint investigation by the Shin Bet security agency and the Galilee District Central Police Unit.

According to the indictment, Hamira, who served in the IDF between 2017 and 2019, began showing increasing interest in ISIS in 2023. He allegedly watched ISIS propaganda online and developed an identification with its values and goals. In 2024, he decided to join the fighting outside of Israel, saving money and preparing for travel to conflict zones in Syria or Africa.

As part of his alleged preparations, Hamira reportedly watched videos of executions and beheadings to "strengthen himself." He also downloaded guides on manufacturing missiles and drones. The prosecution has requested that he be held in custody until the legal proceedings against him are concluded.

The indictment was filed against Hamira at the Magistrate's Court in the city. The investigation revealed that he trained and studied combat methods with the intention of joining ISIS overseas.
