Ex-IDF Soldier Charged with Planning to Join ISIS
An indictment has been filed against Khamis Sawad Hamira, a Bedouin resident of the Galilee who previously served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), on charges of identifying with the Islamic State (ISIS) and planning to join the terrorist organization abroad. Hamira, in his 30s, was arrested following a joint investigation by the Shin Bet security agency and the Galilee District Central Police Unit.
According to the indictment, Hamira, who served in the IDF between 2017 and 2019, began showing increasing interest in ISIS in 2023. He allegedly watched the group's online content, developing sympathy for its values and actions. In 2024, he decided to join the fighting outside of Israel, reportedly watching videos of executions and beheadings to "strengthen himself" for the cause.
The prosecution stated that Hamira downloaded guides for producing missiles and drones and saved money to travel to conflict zones in Syria or Africa. He also allegedly trained and studied combat methods in preparation for joining ISIS. The prosecution has requested that he be held in custody until the legal proceedings are concluded.
