Israeli Forward Sayed Abu Farhi Joins Colorado Rapids in Multi-Million Dollar Transfer

Israeli striker Sayed Abu Farhi has officially transferred to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer (MLS) for approximately $6 million, with additional bonuses. This move makes him the second-highest acquisition in the American club's history and one of Maccabi Tel Aviv's largest sales. The complex negotiations spanned several weeks, with both clubs demonstrating persistence. The Colorado Rapids were convinced Abu Farhi would lead their offense for years to come, even clearing a professional roster spot for him.

Maccabi Tel Aviv's sporting director Steven Vanaar and Jake Engledis, along with owner Mitch Goldhar, spearheaded the negotiations with Colorado. Notably, the deal was conducted directly between Maccabi, Colorado, and the MLS, bypassing typical international agencies often used in such transfers involving Israeli players.

Abu Farhi's talent was first recognized at age 11 by Maccabi scouts Ran Elias and Doron Israeli, who recruited him to the club's youth academy. He progressed through the ranks, gaining experience on loan at MS Kfar Qasem and Bnei Raina, where he developed into a decisive player. His performance last season for Maccabi Tel Aviv was stellar, with 10 goals and 3 assists in 41 games, establishing him as the team's leading forward at just 20 years old.

European clubs like Torino, Bologna, Lecce, and LASK Linz had shown interest, as had several MLS teams including the New York Red Bulls and Columbus Crew. The Colorado Rapids secured their priority by placing Abu Farhi on the MLS's Discovery List, a mechanism for reserving negotiation rights with international players.

Abu Farhi signed a four-year contract, reportedly earning up to $800,000 gross annually plus performance bonuses. He will also retain a percentage of any future transfer fee, allowing him to benefit financially from potential future value increases. Agent Shachar Greenberg described the deal as lengthy and challenging, praising both Maccabi's representatives for protecting the club's interests and Colorado's for keeping the deal alive, ultimately satisfying all parties involved.
