Tel Sheva Council Head Arrested for Bribery and Bid Rigging

The head of the Tel Sheva local council has been arrested on suspicion of bribery and bid rigging offenses. His detention was extended by seven days by a court on Monday to allow for continued investigation.

The arrest followed a months-long covert investigation by the National Fraud Investigation Unit (LAHAV 433) in collaboration with Border Police and Southern District officers. The investigation transitioned to a public phase on Monday, leading to the apprehension of seven suspects, including the council head and his family members. Six additional individuals were detained for questioning.

Police searched the Tel Sheva local council offices and the homes of the suspects, seizing numerous documents and computer materials. Authorities suspect the council head and others manipulated public tenders within the local authority over an extended period, accepting bribes and engaging in fraud and breach of trust.

Investigators are also examining allegations of fictitious employment within the council, intended to fraudulently extract public funds for private gain. Police stated the operation is part of a broader effort to combat crime within the Arab and Bedouin sectors in the Negev, specifically targeting attempts to exploit local authorities for criminal profit at the public's expense.
