Southern Israel Council Head Arrested on Suspicion of Multi-Million Shekel Bribery and Fraud

Police investigators from Lahav 433, along with extensive forces from various units including the National Guard and the Gideonim unit, arrested seven suspects on Monday, including a serving council head in southern Israel and members of his family. The suspects are accused of serious offenses including bribery, rigging tenders, fraud, and fictitious employment, allegedly totaling millions of shekels.

Authorities suspect the council head systematically exploited his public office and position to advance private financial interests. The investigation focuses on allegations of receiving bribes through the manipulation of public tenders, breach of trust, and employing individuals fictitiously within the council to fraudulently obtain funds for personal gain.

In addition to the arrests, which also included senior council officials, six other individuals were detained. Comprehensive searches were conducted at the local authority's offices, yielding documents and digital media relevant to the investigation. The operation is being conducted in close cooperation with the Southern District police, the Tax Authority, and the Israel Money Laundering and Terror Financing Prohibition Authority, with oversight from the State Prosecutor's Office Economic Department.

The police stated that this operation is part of a significant effort to combat crime within the Bedouin sector in the Negev, aiming to prevent criminal elements from using official authorities as bases for illegal activities. The arrested individuals are expected to be brought before the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court for remand extension hearings. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the full scope of the affair and the potential involvement of additional parties.
