IDF Reserve Commander Warns Settler Violence in West Bank Poses International Threat

A retired deputy commander of the IDF's West Bank division, Colonel Aharon Hinman, stated on Sunday that recent violent disturbances by Israeli settlers in the Palestinian village of Qusra pose an international threat to Israel. Speaking on the "Kovnovich" program, Hinman condemned the actions, saying, "The Americans and other countries see this very unfavorably, and rightly so. This is something that deserves all condemnation. There is no place for anyone to enter an Arab village and attack random Arabs." He attributed the violence to unsupervised youths, many of whom have dropped out of school, who seek confrontation and "action." Hinman expressed understanding for the military's reluctance to intervene, citing legal ambiguities and the potential fear among soldiers of confronting settlers. He highlighted the difficulty of apprehending perpetrators, especially those under the age of criminal responsibility, which is 12 in Israel. The incident involved dozens of Israeli rioters entering Qusra, throwing stones at Palestinians, and barricading themselves in a Palestinian home. The IDF reported confiscating vehicles used by the rioters and opening a police investigation, stating that the military "strongly condemns any type of violence." Palestinian reports indicated eight injuries from stone-throwing, while the IDF noted one Palestinian woman sustained a non-urgent injury. Prime Minister Netanyahu denounced the acts as "despicable acts of violence by a handful of rioters who violate the law and harm Israel's standing in the world." President Herzog called the actions "crossing a red line by lawbreakers acting in complete opposition to the laws and values of the State of Israel."
