נשיא המדינה, יצחק הרצוג, החליט לבטל את יתרת עונשו של החייל אלאור אזריה, שהורשע בהריגת מחבל מנוטרל. ההחלטה התקבלה לקראת יום הכיפורים, במטרה לאפשר לאזריה "להמשיך בחייו".

בהודעת בית הנשיא נאמר כי הרצוג שקל את כל נסיבות המקרה, וכן את העובדה שאזריה "ריצה עונש על מעשיו במשך שנים רבות". עוד הודגש כי הנשיא "סבור כי מכלול הנסיבות, הזמן שחלף מאז האירוע, והחרטה שהביע, מהווים בסיס מספק להעניק לאזריה הזדמנות להתחיל חיים חדשים".
