Israeli President Pardons Soldier Convicted of Killing Unarmed Palestinian
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has decided to pardon Elor Azaria, a former IDF soldier convicted of killing an incapacitated Palestinian attacker, thereby annulling the remainder of his prison sentence. Herzog stated that the decision was made "on the eve of Yom Kippur" to allow Azaria "to continue his life."
The President's office announced that Herzog made this decision after "weighing all the circumstances of the case," and also taking into account that Azaria had "served his sentence for his actions for many years."
The statement emphasized that the president "considers the totality of the circumstances, the time elapsed since the crime, and the expressed remorse sufficient grounds to allow Azaria to start life anew."
