המשטרה עצרה את סוראפל גטהון, בן 27 מנתניה, בחשד למעורבות בגניבת רובי סער מבסיס שייטת 13 בעתלית ולסחר בנשק הגנוב. במהלך הדיון להארכת מעצרו, טען החוקר שצמן כי גרסתו של גטהון אינה מתיישבת עם הראיות בתיק ואף מחזקת אותן, וכי תפקידו של החשוד בגניבה מרכזי. המשטרה ביקשה להאריך את מעצרו בעשרה ימים, אך השופטת ראניה סרוג'י, לאחר שעיינה בתיק החקירה וקבעה כי קיים חשד סביר ועילת מעצר, האריכה את מעצרו עד ל-17 בספטמבר, בהסכמת הסניגור ובהתחשב בערב יום הכיפורים. החוקר סירב להשיב אם כלי הנשק שנגנבו נמצאו.
