Suspect Arrested in Elite Naval Unit Arms Theft Case
Authorities have arrested Sorafel Gaton, a 27-year-old from Netanya, in connection with the theft of assault rifles from the elite Shayetet 13 naval commando unit's base in Atlit. Gaton is also suspected of involvement in trafficking the stolen weapons.
During a court hearing, Investigator Shutzman stated that Gaton's account of events actually strengthens the evidence against him, as his version of the story does not align with the existing proof in the case. The investigator declined to confirm whether the stolen weapons had been recovered.
The police requested an extension of Gaton's detention by ten days. However, Judge Rania Sarouji, after reviewing the investigation file, determined that there was reasonable suspicion and grounds for continued detention. With the agreement of Gaton's defense attorney, who consulted with his client and accepted the court's proposal, his arrest was extended until Thursday, September 17, at 12:00 PM, taking into account the proximity of Yom Kippur.
