Police finish probe into ex-Foreign Minister Eli Cohen over diplomatic passports
Israel Police said Wednesday that its Lahav 433 anti-fraud unit has completed its investigation into former Foreign Minister Eli Cohen over suspicions that diplomatic passports were issued for improper reasons. The case was opened in January 2024 with the approval of the attorney general, on suspicion of breach of trust by Cohen and other senior officials in his ministry.
According to police, the inquiry was conducted together with the State Attorney’s Office tax and economics division. Dozens of people were questioned and many documents were seized during the investigation.
After all investigative steps were completed, Lahav 433 commander Commander Meni Binyamin approved the case summary and passed it to the head of the Investigation and Intelligence Division, Commander Boaz Bilt, who also approved it and ordered that it be transferred to prosecutors for a decision. The police announcement means the file is now in the hands of the prosecution, which will decide whether to file charges.
