The dispute began when Levinson shared a screenshot of an Instagram story posted by Tal, showing his black passport at Ben Gurion Airport with the caption "Work trip this time." Levinson questioned why Tal, an external advisor, possessed a diplomatic passport.

Tal responded by referencing a past controversy involving Levinson, stating, "I can assure you I am not doing business with Qatar." Levinson escalated the argument, alleging, "From my acquaintance with Gideon Sa'ar, he would have also [done something inappropriate] for the Emir of Qatar in exchange for a job."

The background of the exchange relates to allegations that previously linked Levinson to individuals connected with Qatar. Levinson had denied doing business with or knowing about such connections. However, it was later revealed he received funds from a company owned by Shrolik Einhorn, who was linked to the "Qatargate" scandal. Levinson explained the money was for ghostwriting and campaign work in the Balkans and apologized for not disclosing this to his readers.

Following these revelations, Levinson was dismissed from the newspaper Haaretz and ceased his television presenting work.
