Police forces conducted a large-scale operation this morning in a southern Israeli town, arresting seven suspects including a serving mayor and members of his family. The arrests are part of an investigation into alleged bribery, bid rigging, fraud, and fictitious employment schemes.
The investigation, led by the Lahav 433 fraud squad's tender task force in cooperation with the Southern District Police, had been ongoing secretly for months. Authorities suspect the individuals defrauded the local council of funds, channeling them for personal gain.
On Monday, the investigation transitioned to its public phase. Police officers, along with National Guard and Special Patrol Unit officers, apprehended the seven suspects, including senior council officials and the mayor's relatives. Six additional individuals were detained for questioning.
The suspects are expected to be brought before the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court later today for remand extensions. Police stated the operation is a significant enforcement action against crime and criminals in the Negev's Bedouin sector, who they claim attempt to turn official authorities into crime strongholds.
