Omer Ala'asam, the head of the Tel Sheva local council in the Negev, was arrested Monday on suspicion of leading a sophisticated corruption scheme that allegedly siphoned millions of shekels from public funds for his personal and family gain. The scheme reportedly involved bribery, rigged tenders, and the employment of ghost employees who received salaries without working.
The investigation, conducted by the economic unit of Lahav 433, transitioned from a covert to an overt phase on Monday, involving a large police operation. Officers raided the council offices and other locations in southern Israel, arresting seven suspects and detaining six others. Evidence was seized during the extensive operation.
Ala'asam is accused of exploiting his position over an extended period to transform the council into a private family enterprise. The investigation is a joint effort with the Israel Tax Authority and the Prohibition on Money Laundering and Terror Financing Authority, with close supervision from the State Prosecutor's Office. The goal is to dismantle the financial mechanism used to divert public money into private hands in the Negev region.
