A sitting council head in southern Israel, along with seven other suspects including family members, has been arrested on suspicion of bribery, fraud, and corruption offenses. The arrests follow a months-long covert investigation by Lahav 433, the Israel Police's Major Crimes Unit, in cooperation with the Southern District police. Investigators suspect the council head facilitated bid rigging and the employment of fictitious workers within the local authority. Allegations also include attempts to illegally transfer public funds for personal gain.
As the investigation moved into its public phase, large police forces, including tactical units from the Border Police and National Guard, raided the local authority's offices. Searches were conducted, and the suspects were apprehended. The operation is being conducted in collaboration with the Israel Tax Authority and the Israel Money Laundering and Terror Financing Prohibition Authority, with oversight from the State Prosecutor's Economic Department.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court later today for a remand hearing. A police statement described the operation as a significant governance effort against crime and criminals in the Negev's Bedouin sector, aiming to prevent official authorities from becoming bases for criminal activity.
