Tel Sheva Mayor Arrested on Bribery and Fraud Charges, Held for 8 Days

Omar Ze'el Alaa'am, the mayor of Tel Sheva, was arrested on suspicion of bribery, fraud, and other criminal offenses including bid rigging and fictitious employment. His detention was extended by eight days until next Monday by the Magistrate's Court in Petah Tikva. Judge Erez Malmad stated in his decision that the evidence gathered so far suggests the mayor and others exploited their positions for personal gain, misusing public funds.

In total, seven suspects were arrested and six were detained as part of the investigation, which also involved searches of the local council offices. The operation was conducted by officers from the Lahav 433 anti-corruption unit, along with special police forces and officers from the Southern District.

The police revealed that a covert investigation had been underway for months, focusing on suspicions of bribery through bid rigging, fraud, breach of trust, and fictitious employment within the council to embezzle funds. The investigation transitioned to its public phase on Monday, leading to the arrests of senior council officials, including the mayor and his family members.

The investigation is being carried out in cooperation with the Southern District police, the Tax Authority (VAT and Income Tax), and the Israel Money Laundering and Terror Financing Prohibition Authority, and is supervised by the State Prosecutor's Office Economic Department.
