Finland Extends Defense Ties With Israel Amid Criticism

Despite significant public criticism of Israel within Finland, Helsinki has extended its defense cooperation with Jerusalem until 2034. This agreement includes joint research, development, and procurement of defense systems, along with a permanent coordination mechanism between the two nations.

A key component of this extended partnership is Finland's acquisition of Israel's David's Sling missile defense system, a deal valued at approximately 317 million euros. Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in collaboration with the United States, David's Sling is designed to counter medium and long-range aerial threats and missiles.

The Finnish public broadcaster Yle reported on the extended cooperation, noting that it continues even as voices in Finland and other European countries have intensified their criticism of Israel's conduct in the Gaza war. Calls for Israel to cease hostilities and concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza have become more prominent.

The report also suggests that the Finnish Ministry of Defense may be withholding information regarding its security cooperation with Israel. This indicates a divergence between public and political discourse, which has become more critical of Israel, and the continuation of practical defense ties, with Finland securing advanced Israeli defense technology for the long term.
