Finland's Secret Defense Pact with Israel Sparks Political Firestorm

Finnish opposition parties are fiercely criticizing the government following a report by broadcaster Yle revealing a secret defense cooperation agreement with Israel, extended until 2034. The memorandum of understanding, initiated by Finland in early 2024, covers research, development, and procurement of military products and includes a joint coordination team meeting at least annually.

Sanna Marin, chairwoman of the Green Party, called the government's policy a "historical shame," accusing it of deepening ties with Israel instead of applying pressure. She linked this to Finland's decision to halt funding for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. This announcement follows reports that Finland is stopping financial support for UNRWA, according to Finnish Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, Ville Tavio. Finland had previously suspended funding to UNRWA following allegations that 12 of its employees were involved in Hamas's October 7th attacks on Israel. UNRWA has since fired the suspected employees.

The Left Alliance party announced it would submit a parliamentary inquiry to examine the circumstances of the agreement's signing and arms trade policy, with party chairwoman Liisa Kousa criticizing the lack of transparency surrounding its approval. Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen rejected the criticism, explaining it as a routine agreement with forty countries, aimed at meeting Finland's defense needs and supporting existing air defense and procurement projects.

Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, Janne Jaakkola, supported this stance, noting that the Israeli "David's Sling" missile defense system, approved for purchase in 2023 for over 300 million euros, stood out for its performance. He stated that procurement decisions are based on military capabilities, costs, and suitability.
