Finland and Israel Extend Secret Defense Pact to 2034
Finland and Israel have secretly extended a memorandum of understanding for defense cooperation through 2034, according to reports in Finnish media. The agreement, which was originally signed in 2013 and has been extended incrementally, was recently renewed for a decade. This latest extension includes collaboration on research, development, and procurement of defense equipment.
The most significant transaction under the pact occurred in November 2023, when Finland purchased Israel's David's Sling missile defense system for approximately 317 million euros. David's Sling, developed jointly by Israel's Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, is designed to intercept medium-to-long-range rockets and missiles, as well as cruise missiles, enhancing air defense capabilities.
The renewal of the defense agreement has sparked criticism from Finland's opposition parties. Sofia Virta, chairwoman of the Green League, called the government's policy a "historical shame," arguing that Finland should be pressuring Israel over the ongoing conflict rather than deepening ties. Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen defended the agreement, stating it is one of about 40 similar defense pacts Finland maintains.
Another key area of cooperation involves the integration of Israel's Iron Fist active protection system, known internationally as Trophy, onto Finnish Patria AMV XP 8x8 armored vehicles. This system is designed to defend against anti-tank missiles, drones, and other threats, and can also identify the origin of enemy fire. The Finnish military commander, Janne Jaakkola, stated that Finland seeks the best defense systems for its needs but declined to provide further details on the scope of cooperation with Israel.
