Israel and Finland Secretly Extend Defense Cooperation Pact to 2034
Israel and Finland have secretly signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen their defense cooperation through 2034, a move revealed by Finnish media following criticism from opposition figures. The agreement enhances mutual coordination in research, development, and procurement of military equipment.
The initial pact was signed in 2013, with Finland's government initiating an extension and updated framework in early 2024 for the next decade. Previously, the agreement was renewed every five years, but this extension is significantly longer.
The intensified collaboration follows Finland's substantial purchase of Israel's David's Sling missile defense system from Rafael in November 2023, a deal valued at approximately 317 million euros. The memorandum of understanding also establishes a joint coordination group of representatives from both nations, which will convene annually to advance bilateral defense ties.
Cooperation between the defense industries includes Finnish company Patria working with Israel's Rafael to integrate the Iron Dome active protection system onto Patria's armored vehicles.
