Finland and Israel Extend Secret Defense Pact Until 2034

Finland and Israel have secretly extended a defense cooperation memorandum of understanding until 2034, according to Finnish media reports. The agreement, originally signed in 2013 and previously renewed in five-year increments, was proposed for a decade-long extension by the Finnish government in early 2024. The pact encompasses joint research, development, and procurement of defense equipment.

Key defense deals between the two nations include Finland's purchase of Israel's David's Sling missile defense system for approximately 317 million euros in November 2023. David's Sling, developed by Rafael, Israel's Ministry of Defense, and the US Missile Defense Agency, is designed to intercept medium-to-long-range rockets and cruise missiles, bolstering Israel's multi-layered air defense alongside Iron Dome and Arrow systems.

Another significant collaboration involves integrating Israel's Trophy active protection system onto Finnish military vehicles. Patria, a Finnish defense company, is working with Rafael to implement Trophy, known internationally as Windbreaker, onto its Patria AMV XP 8X8 platforms to enhance protection against anti-tank missiles and drones.

The extension of the defense agreement has drawn criticism from Finland's opposition parties. Sofia Virta, chairwoman of the Green League, called the government's policy a "historical shame," arguing that Finland should increase pressure on Israel regarding the ongoing conflict instead of deepening ties. Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen defended the agreement, stating it is one of about 40 similar agreements Finland holds.

The memorandum also includes the establishment of a joint coordination group that meets annually to discuss bilateral security relations. Finnish military officials have indicated that the country is seeking the best defense systems for its needs, without detailing the extent of cooperation with Israel.
