Athens Taxi Driver Arrested for Extorting Israeli Tourists with Threats and Ransom

A 38-year-old taxi driver in Athens was arrested on August 25 after allegedly extorting 600 euros from an Israeli family who had just arrived for vacation. The family was picked up from Athens International Airport on August 13 and taken to their hotel in the city center. Upon arrival, the driver refused to let them out or return their luggage until they paid the inflated fare, threatening them with physical violence. Fearing for their safety, the family complied and paid the demanded sum before filing a complaint with the local crime prevention unit near Syntagma.

Greek police confirmed the driver's identity and opened a case on suspicion of robbery. The suspect was located and detained the following morning and brought before the Athens prosecutor. Authorities are also investigating a separate complaint from another tourist who accused the same driver of attempting to extort 800 euros. The incident highlights concerns over tourist safety and taxi fraud in Athens.

The Israeli family’s quick reporting and police action led to the arrest, and further legal proceedings are expected. The case remains under investigation to determine if additional victims exist and to prevent similar crimes against tourists in the future.
