Ra'am Leader Mansour Abbas Sparks Political Storm Over Israel's Jewish Identity

Mansour Abbas, chairman of the Ra'am party, ignited controversy with a post in Arabic clarifying his stance on Israel's identity and the Palestinian narrative. Abbas acknowledged the Nakba and displacement but explained his recent shift in rhetoric as a strategic move to gain influence for the Arab community. He stated that Israel's Jewish character is an imposed reality chosen by the Jewish majority, not by Arab parties, who accepted it pragmatically to avoid disqualification from elections. Abbas emphasized his priorities as strengthening the Arab community's status, securing national and civil rights, and participating in governance rather than settling for parliamentary opposition. He also reiterated support for Palestinian self-determination and recognition of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

The post provoked sharp criticism from right-wing politicians. Ofir Winter, leader of the "Amcha Israel" party, declared that anyone denying Israel's Jewish identity should not be allowed in the Knesset. Winter's party member Yosef Hadad accused Abbas of duplicity in his statements to Hebrew and Arabic audiences. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich labeled Abbas a "dangerous enemy" and accused him of following the Muslim Brotherhood's strategy of concealing true aims while gaining political power. Smotrich also condemned efforts by Gadi Eizenkot and left-wing factions to form a government including Ra'am.

Likewise, Gilad Erdan of the Unity party accused Abbas of deceiving the election committee and public, alleging Abbas seeks an Islamic caliphate rather than a Jewish state. Yoaz Hendel of the Zionist Home party said Abbas is unfit to serve in the Knesset or government. The Otzma Yehudit party announced plans to petition to disqualify Abbas from the elections, with MK Tali Gottlieb calling for Ra'am's disqualification as well. The political storm is expected to continue, with attention turning to how centrist leaders like Eizenkot and Naftali Bennett will respond to Abbas's remarks.
