Ra'am Leader Mansour Abbas Sparks Political Storm Over Israel's Jewish Identity

A political controversy erupted on Wednesday after Mansour Abbas, head of the Ra'am party, posted in Arabic about Israel's recognition as a Jewish state and the Nakba. Abbas stated that Ra'am accepted the Jewish state definition only to avoid disqualification from running for the Knesset and did not deny the Nakba. His remarks drew sharp criticism from right-wing politicians, with Otzma Yehudit announcing plans to seek his disqualification from the upcoming elections.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich condemned Abbas as a "dangerous enemy, a wolf in sheep's clothing," accusing him of concealing his true intentions through a tactic he called "taqiya." Smotrich also criticized former IDF Chief Gadi Eizenkot and others for pursuing a government coalition involving Abbas, calling it a "dangerous lapse in judgment." Otzma Yehudit echoed these sentiments, accusing Abbas of not recognizing Israel as a Jewish state and criticizing political figures like Naftali Bennett and Eizenkot for potentially relying on Ra'am's support.

Likud's Gilad Erdan joined the criticism, accusing Abbas of deceiving the public and the election committee, asserting that Abbas desires an Islamic caliphate rather than a Jewish state. Erdan used the controversy to advocate for a broad unity government excluding Abbas. Similarly, Amichai Israel party leader retired Brigadier General Ofer Winter called for barring Abbas from Knesset candidacy, stating that those who do not recognize Israel as a Jewish state should leave for an Arab country.

Yoaz Hendel, leader of the Zionist Home-Reservists party, also condemned Abbas, saying his statements disqualify him from both government membership and Knesset membership. The incident has reignited debate over Arab parties' participation in Israeli coalitions, a contentious issue especially since Ra'am joined the Bennett-Lapid coalition. The controversy is expected to dominate election discourse in the coming weeks.
