Israeli Men's Marathon Team Wins Gold at European Athletics Championships

The Israeli men's marathon team returned to Israel after winning the team gold medal at the 2026 European Athletics Championships held in Birmingham. The victory was secured by three Israeli runners finishing in the top eight: Gesau Ayela in third place, Tadesse Getahon fifth, and Eymeru Almeya eighth. Additional team members Yitayau Abohayi and Maru Teferi finished 12th and 22nd respectively, with Bokayo Melde placing 34th. Ayela also earned an individual bronze medal with a time of 2:09:21.

Speaking to Sport 5 upon their return, Gesau Ayela expressed pride in representing Israel and emphasized the team's consistency, noting this was their third team gold in a row. He highlighted the dedication required, including months of training away from family. Bokayo Melde reflected on the significance of bringing pride to Israel, especially in places where the team feels unwelcomed, stating, "We show them the best side of us." Eymeru Almeya called it a great honor to represent the country and expressed happiness about being part of the achievement.
