Israeli Detained in Crete Over Negligent Barbecue Causing Major Wildfire

On Friday evening, a wildfire broke out in southern Crete near Selia around 7:00 PM, rapidly spreading toward the Plakias area amid very high fire risk conditions. Greek fire investigators determined the fire originated from a barbecue used at a villa where an Israeli man, Eli Leon, was staying with two others. The region had been declared at level 4 fire risk, indicating extremely high danger, with strong winds reaching speeds of 45 km/h and gusts up to 60 km/h accelerating the fire's spread.

Emergency services activated the Greek 112 system, ordering evacuations in the Potinari and Soda areas toward the Korakas Rodakino beach. Dozens of firefighters, vehicles, and four helicopters battled the blaze, regaining control after several hours. The villa owner stated that guests, including the Israeli group, had been warned both verbally and in writing not to use barbecues due to the hazardous conditions.

Authorities do not suspect intentional arson but are investigating negligence as the cause. Eli Leon was arrested on suspicion of causing the fire by careless use of the grill. The investigation is ongoing, and the court will decide on possible restrictions or further legal measures against him.
