Israeli Man Arrested in Crete for Causing Forest Fire During Fire Warning

A 35-year-old Israeli citizen was arrested on Saturday in Crete, Greece, on suspicion of accidentally causing a forest fire while grilling during a high fire risk alert. The incident occurred near the village of Agios Vasilios in the Rethymno region of southern Crete on Friday evening. According to Greek fire services, the fire was contained within about four hours and did not spread extensively. No injuries were reported.

The Israeli suspect is expected to appear before a judicial investigator and prosecutor, who will decide whether to file charges. If indicted, the court will also determine whether he remains in custody or is released under restrictions. This arrest comes amid a severe fire season in Greece, where 297 people have been detained so far this year for fire-related offenses, including 267 for accidental fires and others for arson. Authorities have imposed fines totaling approximately 1.14 million euros.

Crete, especially the Rethymno area, has faced significant wildfires recently, complicated by strong winds that hinder firefighting efforts.
