Israeli Tourist Arrested for Negligent Barbecue Causing Major Wildfire in Crete

A 35-year-old Israeli tourist was arrested on Crete on suspicion of causing a large wildfire through negligence after lighting a barbecue despite a high fire risk warning. The fire broke out on Friday around 7 p.m. near the village of Selia in the Rethymno region, where a level four fire danger alert was in effect due to severe weather conditions. Firefighters battled the blaze for four hours before bringing it under control.

Investigations revealed that the Israeli, staying at a villa with two other Israelis, used a barbecue despite explicit warnings from the villa owner not to do so because of strong winds. The villa owner publicly apologized to local residents for the distress caused and expressed deep regret, stating he had warned the group beforehand but they did not heed his advice. The Israeli suspect is expected to appear before local police investigators for questioning.

The villa owner emphasized his cooperation with authorities and his commitment to stand by those affected by the fire. The incident highlights the dangers of ignoring fire safety warnings in high-risk areas, especially during adverse weather conditions.
