Colombia Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 224 with Over 2,700 Missing

Colombian authorities reported on Tuesday that the death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck the country on Monday has reached 224. More than 2,700 people remain missing following the disaster. In the western Cauca Valley region, 188 individuals are unaccounted for, according to President Abelardo de la Espriella. The same area recorded 35 fatalities and approximately 700 injuries. The earthquake, measuring 7.4 in magnitude, caused extensive damage including the destruction or severe damage of 5,000 homes and three hospitals.

Rescue teams continue searching for survivors amid the rubble in the city of Cali. President de la Espriella emphasized that the primary concern for authorities is locating the missing persons. To prevent looting in affected areas, additional security forces have been deployed. The quake struck in the afternoon local time, prompting international offers of aid.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar expressed Israel’s readiness to assist Colombia, stating that Israel is monitoring the situation closely and prepared to provide support as needed. This comes amid ongoing diplomatic ties between Israel and Colombia, which were recently renewed after a two-year hiatus.
