7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Jewish Community in Cali, Colombia

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday night, causing over 130 deaths and injuring hundreds more. Rescue teams and volunteers worked through the night searching for survivors amid widespread destruction.

Meir Partush, head of the Jewish Community Center in Cali known as "The Jewish House," described the severe impact on the local Jewish community. Although no physical injuries were reported among community members, many families lost their homes. The community synagogue suffered significant damage, including a collapsed wall on its roof and ceiling destruction in several rooms.

Partush explained that The Jewish House serves as a central hub for Jewish life in Cali, providing kosher food, religious services three times daily, educational activities for children, and assistance to Israeli travelers and Jews in need. Since there is no Chabad presence in the city, the center operates through donations and offers support to all who seek help, including non-Jews affected by the earthquake.

During the night, the center aided many displaced Jews, emphasizing the community's limited resources and reliance on external donations. Partush also contacted local hostels and Israeli travelers to ensure their safety. He expressed hope and prayers for recovery and stability, stating, "We pray that the Holy One, blessed be He, will send us the redeemer and that everything will return to normal peacefully."
