Unusual August Rain Expected in Israel Following Heatwave

Israel is experiencing an intense heatwave with temperatures peaking before an unusual weather event brings rain this weekend. According to Dr. Amir Givati, head of the Meteorological Service, the hottest day will be in the next 24 hours, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius in the mountains and up to 45 degrees in the Jordan Valley. After this peak, temperatures are expected to gradually decrease but will remain high with heavy to extreme heat conditions in most areas.

On Saturday afternoon, local rain showers are forecasted, an uncommon occurrence for mid-August. These showers are likely in northern and central Israel, especially in eastern regions such as the Golan Heights, Jordan Valley, Judean Desert, and around the Dead Sea. Some areas may experience heavy rainfall, accumulating several millimeters in a short time.

This unusual weather pattern is linked to a climate phenomenon called "Super El Niño," which began in the Pacific Ocean and is expected to peak in December. This event is disrupting weather patterns globally, including in Israel. Temperature forecasts for key cities include Jerusalem at 24-33°C, Tel Aviv 24-34°C, Haifa 26-33°C, and Be'er Sheva 23-37°C.
