Trump Demands Compensation from Iran Amid Tehran's War Damage Claims

Iran has demanded compensation from the United States for damages caused during the recent five-month military conflict, which began over concerns about Iran's nuclear ambitions. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his own counter-demand for reparations from Tehran. Trump instructed his representatives to raise this issue in all future negotiations between the two countries.

Trump highlighted that Iran's compensation claim had never been mentioned in previous talks, calling it an "interesting idea" that opens the door for the U.S. to seek damages for lives lost and injuries caused by Iran's actions. He specifically cited the killing and wounding of Americans through roadside bombs and other conflicts led initially by General Qassem Soleimani, including families of those killed in the USS Cole attack and thousands of others.

Furthermore, Trump expanded his demand to include compensation for the families of hundreds of thousands of innocent protesters killed by Iran over the past 50 years, as well as the 52,000 people who died in the recent five months of conflict. He emphasized that his representatives were instructed to firmly incorporate this demand in any future talks.

Trump also commented on Iran's dire economic situation, noting that the country struggles to pay its soldiers and that the intensified U.S. naval blockade has worsened the crisis. He added that the recent drop in oil prices to just over $75 per barrel eases pressure on American consumers. Trump described the U.S. approach to Iran as a strategic "chess game."

Separately, Iranian official Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr reiterated Iran's demands for full compensation for war damages, lifting all sanctions, and releasing frozen Iranian funds. Previously, these demands were conditions for a nuclear deal, but Iran now presents them as prerequisites for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalating compensation demands and economic pressures underscore the tense and complex state of U.S.-Iran relations following the recent conflict.
