Active top-league footballer arrested over suspected illegal betting and match fixing
An active football player in Israel's top league was arrested Monday morning by officers from the sports betting unit of Lahav 433's national economic crimes division. He is suspected of acting with others in violations of anti-money-laundering law, tax offenses, and large-scale illegal betting.
Investigators also say there is serious suspicion that he was involved in match fixing. According to the probe, the footballer allegedly placed bets systematically and illegally, conduct police described as incompatible with being an active player on a top-division team.
The investigating unit said more questioning is expected in the coming period, including additional suspects and other people involved in the case.
