Top-League Footballer Arrested on Suspicion of Match-Fixing and Illegal Betting
Israeli police said Monday morning that a current player for a top-flight football club was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into a gang from Migdal HaEmek handled by the Northern District of Lahav 433. The arrest was carried out by the Sports Betting Unit of Lahav 433, the police said.
In a formal statement, police said the player is suspected of large-scale illegal betting, match-fixing, and offenses under the Prohibition on Money Laundering Law and tax violations, allegedly committed together with others. The investigation is being conducted by the Lahav 433 unit dealing with bribery and sports betting, in full cooperation with the Israel Football Association.
Police said the suspect, described as an active player in a top-tier team, is believed to have placed bets systematically and illegally in a way that was incompatible with his role as a professional footballer. They added that further questioning of additional suspects and others involved is expected.
The arrest follows others made last week in the same case, which police said remains under active investigation. The report described the developments as a major drama in Israeli football.
