Footballer in match-fixing probe denies involvement as court extends detention
Israeli football was shaken on Sunday after police said they had arrested a player from a top-tier club on suspicion of match-fixing, illegal betting, and tax offenses. The Petah Tikva Magistrate’s Court extended his detention until Thursday, citing concern that he could obstruct the investigation, while also keeping a publication gag order in place, according to attorney Batel Sheriki.
The player is cooperating with investigators and denies any connection to the allegations. Police believe there is evidentiary linkage between him and a criminal organization arrested last week as part of the same case.
People close to the player pushed back against the public reaction, saying, “People online have already convicted him. People should wait patiently. Many people will eat their words. He is a good guy who got caught in a situation and got out of it.”
Before his arrest, the player had been in demand from several clubs, and those around him believe he will soon be able to return to routine with his team. Police are still investigating the broader affair, and a court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
