Active Top-League Footballer Arrested in Match-Fixing and Illegal Betting Probe
Israeli police arrested an active football player from a top-tier league on Sunday morning, suspecting him of illegal betting, match-fixing, and additional financial crimes. The arrest was carried out by officers from Lahav 433’s sports betting unit as part of a major investigation led by the national economic crime unit, YaLah, in Lahav 433.
According to police, the case is tied to a large-scale criminal network from Migdal HaEmek. Investigators suspect the player placed large illegal bets, took part in fixing matches, and committed offenses under the Prohibition of Money Laundering Law and tax offenses together with other suspects.
Police said the player is believed to have bet systematically and illegally while still active on a top-division team, conduct investigators said is incompatible with the status of a professional athlete. The current arrest follows a series of arrests made last week in the same probe.
Police added that the investigation is continuing in full cooperation with the Israel Football Association, and that more interrogations of additional suspects are expected.
