Israeli police arrest top-division footballer in match-fixing and illegal betting probe
Israeli police said Monday morning that they arrested an active footballer from a top-flight team as part of an investigation into a criminal gang from Migdal HaEmek handled by the Northern District of Lahav 433. The arrest was carried out by the Sports Gambling Unit of Lahav 433.
According to the police statement, the player is suspected of large-scale illegal betting, match-fixing, and violations of anti-money-laundering and tax laws, allegedly committed together with others. Police said the case involves extensive betting activity and that the player was arrested on suspicion of systematically placing illegal bets.
The investigation, led by the Lahav 433 bribery and sports betting unit, is being conducted in full cooperation with the Israel Football Association. Police said the latest arrest follows arrests made last week in the same case.
Investigators said additional suspects and involved parties are expected to be questioned as the probe continues. The announcement did not name the player or the club.
