Top-League Footballer Arrested in Match-Fixing and Illegal Betting Probe
Israeli police arrested a senior active footballer on Thursday morning in a covert investigation into a gang operating in the Migdal HaEmek area. The arrest was carried out by the sports betting unit of Lahav 433, in close coordination with the Israel Football Association.
The player’s registration belongs to a leading Premier League club, but he has been loaned this season to a team in the National League. He is suspected of being deeply involved in a broader criminal case, alongside other suspects.
Police say the main suspicions include large-scale illegal betting, direct involvement in match-fixing, and financial crimes such as tax offenses and money laundering. According to investigators, he allegedly placed systematic illegal bets while continuing to play for a top-tier club. Police said this conduct is “clearly unfit” for an active player registered with a major team.
The arrest is not the first in the case. It follows a targeted wave of arrests carried out last week against additional members of the same Migdal HaEmek gang. Police say the investigation is extensive, and more arrests and interrogations are expected in the coming days as the probe develops.
