Top-League Footballer’s Detention Extended in Match-Fixing Gambling Probe
A currently active footballer from Israel’s top division was arrested at Ben Gurion Airport and had his detention extended by court order for further questioning. The arrest came as police advanced a widening investigation into illegal gambling and suspected match-fixing in Israeli football.
The case was disclosed publicly on Monday morning, when it was reported that the Sports Gambling Unit of Lahav 433’s national economic crimes division, working with the Israel Football Association, is leading a broad investigation. Police suspect the player was involved in a sustained and systematic operation involving illegal betting on a large financial scale, money laundering, tax offenses, and serious suspicions of manipulating matches, while still playing for a major club.
According to the report, the timing of the arrest at Israel’s main entry and exit point was deliberate. The player’s club is now considering whether to terminate his contract.
His arrest adds to a series of detentions already carried out last week in the same case, which centers on a betting network and a gang from the Migdal HaEmek area. Police said the investigation is still ongoing and that more arrests and interrogations are expected in the coming days, involving additional figures from inside and outside the sports world.
