Gilad Erdan and Yuli Edelstein Launch New Party to Push for Broad Unity Government

Israeli Interior Minister and former ambassador Gilad Erdan is set to announce the formation of a new political party tomorrow after weeks of negotiations and deliberations. Knesset member Yuli Edelstein will join Erdan, leaving Likud to become the second on the new party's list. The party aims to join the so-called "third bloc," a political camp that refuses to automatically support either of the two main blocs and instead seeks to establish a broad unity government following the upcoming elections.

Earlier this week, Erdan hinted at his intentions on X (formerly Twitter), stating that his party would not join a "narrow government of either side" and emphasizing public skepticism toward promises on conscription and unity. This new party adds to several efforts to create a centrist political force unaffiliated with the two dominant blocs. Meanwhile, Benny Gantz continues his independent run, and Hili Tropper and Yoaz Hendel have already announced the formation of "Zionist Home - The Reservists" party, raising questions about the viability of multiple similar lists passing the electoral threshold.

In recent months, attempts have been made to unite these various centrist forces. Edelstein engaged in talks with Gantz, and facilitated by Ayelet Shaked, discussions occurred among several groups seeking a joint framework. However, these talks did not result in an agreement, and Shaked herself is not expected to join Erdan and Edelstein's new party.
