Netanyahu Moves to Undermine Gilad Erdan’s New Party Ahead of Launch

Former Minister Gilad Erdan is set to officially announce the formation of a new political party on Thursday, with Knesset member Yuli Edelstein joining the list. Despite the new party’s potential to attract votes away from the left-wing bloc, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes it. Netanyahu’s opposition extends beyond private circles, as efforts are reportedly underway to block key figures from joining Erdan’s party. According to Israel Hayom, the Likud party approached former Beit Shemesh Mayor Aliza Bloch with an offer of a reserved spot on their list to dissuade her from joining Erdan’s venture. It remains unclear whether Bloch will accept the offer or join Erdan.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu ally and Channel 14 commentator Yaakov Bardugo sharply criticized Erdan and Edelstein, accusing them of promoting an agenda of opposition to Netanyahu and hostility toward the ultra-Orthodox community. Bardugo suggested Erdan’s move stems from personal grievances after failing to secure the chairmanship of Israel Aerospace Industries, framing the new party as driven by jealousy and revenge. He emphasized that Erdan’s list must first pass the electoral threshold before discussing government formation.

Erdan is reportedly seeking additional prominent figures to strengthen his party’s chances of crossing the threshold. Recent media reports indicate he has reached out to former Minister Moshe Kahlon, former athlete Oren Smadja, and former military officer Hazi Nahama. The political landscape is watching closely as Erdan attempts to solidify his new party ahead of the upcoming elections.
