Ben Gurion Airport Prepares for Record 2.6 Million Passengers in August Amid Operational Challenges

Ben Gurion Airport is set to experience its busiest month since the start of the war, with approximately 2.6 million passengers expected to pass through in August. On peak days, nearly 100,000 travelers are anticipated, marking a significant increase in passenger volume. The airport will host 47 airlines, including Israeli carriers and recently returned foreign airlines, flying to hundreds of destinations worldwide. Popular destinations among Israeli travelers include Greece, Cyprus, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Germany.

Daily passenger numbers during weekdays, excluding weekends, are projected to range between 90,000 and 95,000. The busiest days are forecasted to be August 6, 13, 17, 20, and 27, each nearing 100,000 passengers. Travelers have already reported long queues, delays, and some flight cancellations due to the heavy traffic.

An additional operational challenge comes from the presence of 33 American refueling aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion, which occupy runway slots and require coordination with passenger and cargo flights. Since the airport operates with a single active runway for takeoffs, this coordination creates logistical pressure that may cause further delays, especially during peak hours.

The Israel Airports Authority advises passengers to arrive at least three hours before departure, complete online check-in, and verify flight times and terminals before leaving home. Those traveling with carry-on luggage only and who have checked in online can use the W terminal for expedited processing. Public transportation is also recommended to ease congestion.

Military reservists are reminded to check their bags for any ammunition or military equipment to avoid security delays. Airport staff are working in enhanced shifts to manage the increased activity, but passengers are urged to prepare in advance and remain patient during expected peak-time congestion.
