Israeli Police Chief Suspends Yoav Eliasi from Reserve Unit Command Amid Controversy

Yoav Eliasi, known as "The Shadow," a member and commander of a police reserve unit in Tel Aviv, has been suspended by Israel Police Chief Major General Danny Levi following a report by Haaretz. The investigation revealed that Eliasi boasted about his connections with police officers, claiming they helped prevent the closure of a nightlife venue in which he was involved. Recorded conversations captured Eliasi instructing partners to immediately inform him of any police actions against the club and expressing anger when authorities ordered its closure after a violent incident. He also mentioned close ties with specific officers, including a policeman named Menashe Menzur, referring to him as "like a brother."

Following the revelations, Eliasi's firearm was confiscated, and the Police Investigations Department opened an inquiry into the matter. Staff and security personnel at the venue reported that Eliasi was the go-to person for handling police-related issues, with some believing his police contacts allowed the club to operate despite serious incidents. Additionally, Eliasi was linked through a family-owned company to a restaurant operating above the nightclub, holding shares that were later transferred to his brother Itamar, the current sole owner.

Eliasi's lawyers stated that he was not dismissed but voluntarily suspended himself pending the investigation. They emphasized his dedication to public safety and adherence to the law, expecting a formal hearing before any decisions are made. Eliasi intends to resume his command of the reserve unit once the inquiry concludes.
