Rapper Yoav Eliasi Suspends Role as Tel Aviv Security Unit Commander Amid Police Favoritism Probe

Yoav Eliasi, known as "HaTzel" (The Shadow), will step down from his position as commander of the Tel Aviv security readiness unit following an investigative report by Haaretz. The report revealed that Eliasi boasted about using his police connections to prevent the closure of the "John Doe" nightclub on Rothschild Boulevard after a violent incident in September, where a security guard was stabbed. Normally, such incidents lead to a 21-day closure, but Eliasi allegedly ensured the club was shut for only one week.

The investigation included testimonies from former club employees who confirmed that Eliasi's ties to law enforcement granted the club special treatment. Idan Harpak, former head of security at the club and victim of the stabbing, stated that it was clear the club received favors due to Eliasi's involvement and influence with police officers. Eliasi is also known to be close to National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Following the report, the Israel Police Commissioner initiated an inquiry. Eliasi's representatives emphasized that he was not dismissed but chose to suspend his service voluntarily until the investigation concludes. They highlighted Eliasi's dedication to public safety and his intention to resume command of the unit after the process. They also called for a formal hearing to allow Eliasi to present his side.

Eliasi holds the rank of Chief Superintendent and is recognized for his commitment to security in central Israel. His suspension reflects the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing scrutiny of his conduct in leveraging police relationships for personal or business advantage.
