Israeli Classified Unit Member Indicted for Espionage After Iranian Intelligence Recruitment

On July 16, 2026, the Israeli State Prosecutor's Office filed serious charges against an Israeli citizen who served in both active and reserve duty within a classified military unit. The indictment, submitted to the Tel Aviv District Court, accuses the individual of contact with a foreign agent and attempting to pass intelligence to benefit an enemy. Investigations by the Shin Bet, the Military Intelligence Directorate (MELMAB), and the Israel Police's Erez Unit revealed that the accused maintained contact with a person identifying as an Iranian intelligence operative. The suspect was even asked to help recruit another soldier to establish further connections with hostile foreign agents.

The accused's cooperation with the Iranian agent involved close communication and efforts to facilitate espionage activities. The case is being handled by attorney Irena Inberg from the Cyber Department of the State Prosecutor's Office. Following the case's exposure, senior officials from the Shin Bet, MELMAB, the IDF, and the Israel Police issued a stern warning to all Israeli citizens and residents. They urged the public to avoid any contact with foreign agents from enemy states or unidentified individuals online or offline and emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious interactions to law enforcement.

In recent months, Israeli security agencies have observed a significant increase in repeated attempts by Iranian intelligence to identify, recruit, and exploit Israeli citizens, especially those with access to sensitive information or with backgrounds in secretive military units. Iranian operatives typically use fake or religious identities on social media, offering financial incentives or employing manipulative tactics to coerce Israelis into espionage or intelligence sharing.
